Coffee, Kink, Buddha, Cake and Killing Kebble Nov 2011

Very, very hot greetings and salutations today puddings! J

As I sit down to write this newsletter at 9.20am it is already 30 degrees outside in Jozi today and it is getting hotter! Just looked at the weather forecast for the next 5 days and there isn’t a drop of rain lurking nearby but there are some clouds! (however the newspaper says differently – there will be severe thunder storms from tomorrow but who knows who is right) The temperature looks like it will remain in the high 20’s and early 30’s! Whoopi!  So remember to wear sun screen and drink loads and loads of water!

Now that my weather report is over, missed my calling apparently, look out Simon Geer.

The Coffee Pot:

I know it is hot and coffee is so not what you are thinking about right now but I have to tell you about the plungers again! They have taken off fabulously and so for November we are going to introduce you to a fabulous Indian coffee that is both full bodied and medium roasted and delicious!

About the coffee …………………

From mystical India comes a medium roasted medium bodied single origin coffee aptly called Indian Monsoon. Full of flavour this coffee will have your taste buds begging for more whilst the superb aromas will have your mind whisked off to somewhere between the eternal snows of the Himalayas in the north to the cultivated peninsula of the far south. This beautiful coffee is 100% Arabica and because it has been roasted locally it freshness is guaranteed.

Plungers make around 3 cups of coffee and cost just R25. You will also find the coffee in 250gram bags for sale on our shelves at R65 per bag!

Fetish & Kink Flea Market:

Just a quick reminder about the market happening this Saturday, 29 Oct at Indulgence from 2pm to 5pm. This is not for everyone’s taste but it is an eye opener for the uninitiated and those looking for a little something else in life! So if whips and chains are not your thing but you are interested in seeing them pop in and say hi, have a look what is on offer! Have something to eat, make some new friends, browse and have fun! Regret NO under 18’s allowed! And while  you are here try our delicious Iced Coffee Granita!

AuthorTalks:

Again this month we are going to spoil you rotten with two AuthorTalks. The first of which is on November 5th  with Daniel Jardim…………This book is a real treat, a vegetarian cookbook with a difference. Also showcased in the book is work by potter Anthony Shapiro, the pottery teacher that I go to for classes

anyway,

Daniel Jardim &The Cake the Buddha Ate: More Quiet Food

Daniel Jardim  hails from a family of cooks headed by his mother, well-known Portuguese chef and cookbook writer, Mimi Jardim.  He lived in the UK for 11 years, where he  ran a private practice in Nutrition and Massage Therapy.  After his return to South Africa he manned the kitchen at the Buddhist Retreat Centre in Ixopo sharing the food that he usually served for friends and family.

The Cake the Buddha AteMore quiet Food asks us to change our attitude to this seemingly mundane human need and make it into a joyful, flavourful journey, full of delights and surprises.  Food is one of the first casualties of our hectic pace of life – in the way we eat it as well as in the way we prepare it.

There is more to the book than outstanding food.  The book has photographs, showcasing the ecological beauty of the BRC, anecdotes, poems and haikus all of which offer a glimpse of the Centre’s magnificent setting and the range of workshops and retreats conducted there.

The bulk of Daniel’s time is dedicated to teaching and he conducts a number of retreats, workshops and demonstrations in Gauteng and KZN. The focus is on healthy eating according to the seasons and he is fast becoming a well-respected teacher with a flair for interesting, but unpretentious vegetarian cuisine that bursts with colour and vitality.

I am going to make a special vegan dish to accompany this talk so if you fancy eating a different kind of lunch with no animal products or by-products please order our lunch special on the day!

Then author number two on the 19th of November is Mandy Wiener with Killing Kebble! This event is bookings only please.

We were fully booked a week ahead of the Piet Byleveld talk this past week end, I had to turn away at least 20 people and in the end I had quite a few no shows and ended up getting into trouble for having the audacity to voice my opinion. Although my comments were not aimed at any table in particular one table took huge offence and has now deleted me from their Facebook profiles. What a fascinating world we live in today, you no longer have to end friendships you just delete the offending parties off your different profiles and they cease to exist. I think it is quite a fascinating phenomenon actually.  Anyway as usual I digress. What I am trying to say is if you book, please remember to come or you end up disappointing someone else who I had to turn away. Unfortunately I have a tendency to be somewhat unsympathetic  to people who let me down but if you give me a heads up that you cannot make it , that is also much very much appreciated (even if I don’t sound it at the time)

Mandy will start her talk at around 2.15pm please be seated well in advance if you are coming for lunch. There will be absolutely no service during the talk.

Mandy Wiener and Killing Kebble:

In September 2005 one of South Africa’s most prominent mining magnates and businessmen, Brett Kebble, was killed on a quiet suburban street in Johannesburg. The top-level investigation into the case that followed was a tipping point for democratic South Africa, exposing the corrupt relationship between the country’s Chief of Police and Interpol President, Jackie Selebi, and suave Mafioso Glenn Agliotti.

A lawless Johannesburg underbelly was revealed – dominated by drug lords, steroid-filled bouncers, an international smuggling syndicate, a shady security unit moonlighting for the police and sinister self-serving sleuths abusing state agencies.

Indemnified by an agreement struck with the state, Kebble’s killers Mikey Schultz, Nigel McGurk and Faizel “Kappie” Smith come clean to Mandy Wiener in exclusive interviews about the events of the night Kebble was shot dead. As Wiener unpacks the chilling events we are given insight into the accounts of the life paths leading the “bungling assassins” to Kebble’s killing. The man accused of orchestrating Kebble’s murder, Glenn Agliotti has provided Wiener with exclusive access to his story, as have a cast of other characters whose versions of the events are as yet untold.

As always please bring along two books per person one to swap and one to donate……………THIS IS THE TICKET PRICE FOR THIS TALK, NO BOOKS NO ENTRYJ

The books are collected and in February we hand over all the collected books to Animals in Distress, a most worthy charity of Amiga’s choice.

Both authors will start at 2pm so please be seated and comfy with orders in well before that time

Celebrate August 2011

Greetings and salutations Puddings

Happy August tidings!

It is official we have passed the half way mark for the year and now the downhill run to the end of the year and year-end functions start………….start thinking about yours soon!

We wish all our Muslim clients well over Ramadan which begins today, hope the fast goes well.

The weather seems to be warming up very nicely, I hope I am not speaking too soon. So maybe summer is on its merry way back to warm the cockles of the heart. In any event the patio at Indulgence is always warm and friendly and ready to welcome you always

This past Saturday author Mike Nicol was at Indulgence for the second of the July AuthorTalks and I have to say yet again that he is fabulous! What a marvelous speaker and great all round guy to listen to. He held his audience in the palm of his hand as we happily lapped up everything he had to say! What an absolute pleasure thank you so much Mike and everyone who joined us as usual!

So what is happening @Indulgence this month:

August 9th Woman’s Day

Celebrate being a magnificent and magical being,  WOMAN, on this very special day that is just for us! Everyday should be Women’s Day but being such magnanimous wonderful creatures we settle for one day of the year! Join us at Indulgence and revel in your womanhood in elaborate style! Dress up to the nines, glamorous, glitzy and blingy, the more you shine the better and then come down and have breakfast with us! Eat whatever your heart desires off the menu, there are no calories in food on public holidays as far as I know. This special will run from 9am to 12 O’clock even though we DO serve breakfast ALL day!  And then the kicker of the day is that any man who comes dressed as a woman will get a surprise discount off his bill! Adventurous men, cross-dressers and transvestites this is your chance to shine as well and you will fit in 175% if not a little more!  There will be a couple of stalls for you to peruse as well with some jewellery and a few other odds and ends……………..we are not laying on a special menu, we think our breakfast menu will rock you just the way it is! Looking forward to seeing you in your finest

August 20th AuthorTalk

This month’s author is a mystery author at this point in time………….I promise to get back to you as soon as I have locked him/her down! Whomever it turns out to be will, I promise be just as fabulous and fascinating as all our previous authors. I am shifting the AuthorTalk time back an hour so in future the author will begin at 2pm instead of 3pm. I hope that this will not cause you any inconvenience. Thank you everyone for bringing your books with you, we are starting to get some really nice books in, and also to everyone who has dropped boxes of books here in the past few weeks, thank you as well. On behalf of Animals in Distress I thank you. In the meantime watch this space for our next exciting author!

The August AuthorTalk will also take place on the 3rd Saturday instead of the second, so please make a note in your diary that it will happen on 2pm on the 20th

I still have loads of soup on hand with winter starting to wind down, so I am marking it down by 20% for anyone who fancies picking up a few liters. There is a nice variety available still, pop in and take a peek in the freezer……..it is waiting just for you!

If you are having a birthday in August I hope it is happy and your year incredible, have a look at our FB group for some pictures of cakes to help make your event a whole bunch more memorable!

Wishing you a wonderful August, be good to your neighbours (I love one of mine, he moved out his house) and don’t kick the dog!!

June bugs

Good morning  puddings and pies

Happy June bugs to you!

I am sitting here writing this newsletter with what feels like icicles attached to my hands. I am thinking that writers are very dedicated people to write for hours in winter. That just takes huge dedication when it’s cold and I think even more dedication when the weather is fabulous outside and you are inside writing. However I suppose in summer you can move outside to write with an extension cord. I seriously am not going to be doing that for you today. Let me set the scene for you I am sitting at my desk at home with socks, slippers, track suits pants, t-shirt, sweatshirt and a pashmina wrapped around my neck. Add to the mix a brightly coloured hand knitted throw that my mum made for me keeping my lap warm. My hair is standing on end still and my glasses are perched on the end of my red nose. I think frost bite will be setting in shortly. Adele is singing “Someone like you”  gently in the background.  What I think I am trying to say is that this is going to be a very quickly written newsletter just so that I can go back to the snugness of my bed and cuddle up to Madam Amiga with her warm fur and cold nose. She is so much better than an electric blanket or hot water bottle

Indulgence has donned her winter curtains complete with sinkers to hold them down in the wind. The heaters are out and if I can remember I will take the blankies to work tomorrow for you to keep your laps warm. There is loads of hot chocolate in stock with heaps of marshmallows so no excuse to stay away! Thick soups are on offer daily with chunks of our own home baked bread and hot casseroles will be on the specials menu daily for the duration of the cold weather. ! We will keep you warm and well fed, we promise!

So what is happening @ Indulgence this June for you:

Author talks!! Yes talks for more than one, again we have two to offer you! Two of SA’s top female writers will grace our warm patio this month. The first of which is Fiona Snyckers on Saturday, the 11th of June. And the second is Jo-Anne Richards on the 16th of June public holiday!  I do have to repeat myself here, sorry in advance. Fiona will start at 15h00 on Saturday 11th June. Jo-Anne with start @ 13h30 on Thursday June 16th.  Please as always remember to bring along your two books, one to swap and one to donate. Both of our writers this month are incredibly talented and incredibly deserving of our support so please come along and give them your rapt attention!

Fiona Snyckers:

I asked Fiona for a short bio and she was very obliging

Here is my short bio: “Fiona Snyckers is the author of ‘Trinity Rising’ and ‘Trinity On Air’, published by Jonathan Ball; as well as of the ‘Sisterz’ series of mobile phone novels commissioned by the Shuttleworth Foundation.  She lives in Johannesburg.”

I am attaching pics of both my books because I would like to talk about them as a series.

Jo-Anne Richards:

Jo-Anne was a little more forthcoming with her bio:

Jo-Anne Richards is the author of four novels. Her first was the critically acclaimed bestseller, The Innocence of Roast Chicken,, originally published in London by Headline Review, and rereleased by Rebel-e in 2011.

Innocence was short-listed for the M-Net Book Prize and nominated for the Impac International Dublin Literary Award. It was chosen as a Dillon’s Debut in London, to be showcased as an “outstanding first novel”. When it was first published, it reached number one on the South African bestseller list in the week it appeared and remained there for fifteen weeks.

Her other books are My Brother’s Book, published by Picador Africa in March 2008, Touching the Lighthouse, Headline Review, and Sad at the Edges. Her short stories have been included in six collections.

She teaches creative writing, online and face to face, through www.allaboutwritingcourses.com. She lectures at Wits University in the Honours programme in Journalism & Media Studies.

Also at Indulgence this month is the Fetish Flea Market and kink fair! I know that this is not an event for everyone but it is the only one of its kind in Jozi, it only happens every three  months and there is always something new for you to look at so please pop along and support our stall holders! The market is only open on Saturday afternoon from 2pm to 5pm. Come peruse the stalls, bump into your friends, have some lunch or a slice of one of our very delicious cakes and just hang out. It is good unwholesome funJ Regret no under 18’s allowed. So put June 25th in your diary and come visit.

Our freezer is currently stocked with all manner of delicious goodies. There is a large variety of soups and frozen meals in different sizes. Right now there are lamb shanks slow roasted, soft and delicious and packed in twos for your convenience. There is also pickled fish, chicken livers peri-peri and duck and cherry pie. Yesterday we put chicken and mushroom pasta bakes in as well!. So there is something for everyone in the freezer. Why cook when Indulgence and Lollipops can do it for you!

And that is me done, taking the ice blocks attached to the ends of my legs back to bed. Have an awesome week!

Remember to keep believing in yourself, love yourself because if you don’t……………….well you are missing out!

Frustration is…………..

We live in a very, very busy world. Life today appears to be all about working, rushing, getting the job done, everything done at a frenetic pace. All you manage to get done in a day is if you are lucky wake up, rouse kids, feed them, drop them at school, squeeze in a quick gym session, get to work, work, fetch kids, shop for groceries, crawl home through rush hour traffic (an oxy moron in itself), cook dinner, do home work, fall asleep in front of the TV, wake up and go to bed and the next morning do the whole thing all over again. Finally the week-end rolls around and you breathe a sigh  of relief, a little time to kick back, relax, unwind apart from dropping kids at parties, friends and ballet lessons. You try to carve out for yourself a life between all the rushing, spend time with friends and catch up on old times………….the good old days when you were younger, when money went further, before you had your own business, before you had kids and could actually sleep late…………yes, the good old days!

My industry, the food industry, in my experience is no different apart from the fact that our week works in reverse. The week tends to start off a little slowly as you re-group from the weekend just passed and then all hell breaks loose as you head over the hump and downhill  towards the weekend!  We too rush to and fro making meetings with new customers and calling on old ones, ordering stock, doing quotes, deliveries and being nice to bank managers, understanding to your staff, bending over backwards to accommodate your ever demanding customers, getting the food out, getting the stock in, finding that missing ingredient, finding the time to breathe…………getting to gym, wtf is that!

And we do this all for the love of food because it sure isn’t for the fabulous working hours, the awesome remuneration package with medical aid and  the wonderful car allowance. Why do I do this I ask myself when I wake up and plant m y two aching feet firmly on the ground, as I unwind my twisted neck and stretch my aching lower back?

The hours are unsociable, the work is back-breaking, the tasks often thankless and all of it often fraught with frustration. Is it because I have been doing this for so long, 18 years is indeed a while, that  the thought of doing something else is quite scary, not to mention the fact that I have worked for myself for so long that with all due respect to my eminent self I am most definitely unemployable by any one else mad enough to own a catering company or restaurant or because at this point I have no idea how to do anything else? I don’t know the answers to the questions myself.

What I do know is that everyday I get up and come to work. Everyday it doesn’t feel like a chore. Everyday is different to the one before it. Everyday I meet new people, get to make new food, experiment with old food, laugh with my staff, shout at my staff, laugh at myself. For the all the bitching and moaning I do, I love my business. It is like nurturing a small child who turns into a petulant teenager but like Peter Pan never really grows up to stand on its own two feet with still needing you.

So why am I frustrated this morning you are wondering……….or maybe you not, but I will tell you anyway……..

Money is tight, food is expensive but I don’t have to tell you that, you are fully aware of it! It’s cold outside, it’s raining, it’s  miserable in general out there so a thick, indulgent and delicious soup would be a good thing to make. I go through the walk in fridge there is some left over beef curry from yesterday. Add some lentils, some veggies a little rice and a couple of litres of beef stock and bang curried beef and lentil soup with rice…………….simple, easy and cost-effective. Just the way I like it! With the help of one of my many minions we do this, we make this very yummy looking soup to serve today with a hot crusty bagel. However it is still a little on the thick side so I reach for the just boiled kettle and pour steaming “fragrant” smelling water into my pot of soup! My cleaning bunny neglected to mention that she was de-scaling the kettle.

The end result; now I am minus the curry, minus the lentils, minus the stock and minus the soup but hot damn, I have a clean kettle!

Happiness in my world:)

 Author Talks!!

Yip, there are two of them this month!!! How exciting is that! We figured that seeing as there are some days to spare this month and you may not have anything else planned we would spoil you!! The first Author Talk is April 9th with Tom Cottrell whose book, “5 hour Pilgrim”, has a lovely tale to tell of his monumental promise to himself to run a marathon on every continent in his 50th year! I am, as you may have noticed, not a runner but even I loved this book (yes, for once I have read the book ahead of the time!) You don’t have to be a runner or sporty to enjoy this book, it is an easy read and inspirational as well. We may even have a surprise visit from Bruce Fordyce for this talk, you just never know! As always please be seated by 14h30 for the author to start at 15h00 promptly. Please, as always, remember to bring along your two books, one to donate and one to swap!

How do you measure personal success? After reading this book, your definition will change forever.

This is a story of life; a search for meaning. Tom Cottrell spends his fiftieth year on a personal pilgrimage, running a marathon on every continent. His quest – the growth of his Soul. The standard marathon is made up of twenty miles of hope followed by six miles of truth. Join the Five Hour Pilgrim’s marathon effort as he discovers his own Spirit. Tom Cottrell was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. Renowned for his best-loved annual The Runners’ Guide to Road Races in South Africa, he has inspired hundreds of athletes at all levels to achieve their goals. Tom is chairman of Hospice-in-the-West.

What the critics say – “Tom Cottrell writes with raw honesty about events and feelings that most of us try to suppress, much less express in public. His philosophy of goodness and indestructible optimism has been forged by hardship that began before his birth. This is a story of a life lived to the full. A life without the need for excuses. Not now. Not ever.” Professor Tim Noakes, University of Cape Town and Sports Science Institute of South Africa.

Author of Lore of Running “Husbandhood, fatherhood, Southafricanism, travelogue, success and failure and which is which, a pinch of Gibran and a dash of Descartes … Tom turns his runner’s eyes to a startlingly wide world, and records it with unveiled pen. ” Denis Beckett, Award-winning author, publisher, TV producer “Tom writes and runs in the heartbeat of every moment. The reader runs with him”

Dr Dorian Haarhoff, former Professor of English Literature, University of Namibia. Writer, mentor, poet, storyteller. Author of The Writer’s Voice.

Then because I love all of you sooooooo much on Freedom Day, Wednesday, April 27th Diana Duff will be joining us with her book, Leaves From the Fig tree. I have read an excerpt from the book and I loved reading it and my brain in crying out for more! Diana is a very entertaining speaker so come and join us on the 27th for these lovely extra event! This talk is starting earlier! So please be seated by 13h30 for the author to start promptly at 14h00! This is an hour earlier than usual so please remember that and it is on Wednesday, not Saturday!!

About Diana Duff………………….. Born in Africa but Irish by descent, Diana Duff went to live, aged two, with her grandparents in a Georgian stately home, Annes Grove, set in world-renowned gardens. Enveloped by this rich tapestry, her world seemed magical – the Judas tree reputed to flower only on Good Friday; rare rhododendrons from Tibet; a Chinese coffin tree and blue meconopsis poppies – with talk of horses and fishing juxtaposed with tales of banshees, ráths and the foxy-haired ghost, visits from Elizabeth Bowen, Vita Sackville-West, David Cecil and many others. Aged 18, she returned to Africa to a father she scarcely knew; to Ruanda and Uganda; to crystal lakes and forest gorillas; to Kenya, where she met the legendary Grogan and Raymond Hook who raced cheetahs in Haringay; where she doubled for Grace Kelly in Mogambo; a transfer to Johannesburg, where she challenged the authorities at the height of apartheid – and emerged victorious. With humour, eloquence, empathy and candour, Diana shares her adventures and her arrival at a place from her childhood, where family truths are learned, along with the realisation that Africa has real magic all of its own.

Our biscuit shelves are groaning under the weight of some really yum goodies, there are potted peaches in brandy, potted apricots in brandy, plums in port, jams, preserves and other what-nots like olive oil, salt and pepper, teas and awesome hand bags from Mexico and Easter eggs on the way! Come shopping please, the bank manager is asking very nicely! We have loads of lovely stock in at the moment so we look forward to seeing you soon!

Indulgence has also just had a facelift bit of a nip and tuck with a hint of a Botox injection so she is looking really lovely at the moment. The patio is at its most warm and welcoming even with the lousy weather that we are having and Amiga is missing you if she hasn’t seen you lately so just pop in and say HI!

fabulous frolicking February 2011

Hello all the bodies! 

Hope that January has treated you all fabulously, that the kids are settled nicely into school, the traffic isn’t driving you completely insane and the bank continues to be understanding
I have just returned from the most wonderful, amazing, incredible, awesome etc holiday with 4 of the most amazing women! They sure know how to party up a storm and I was, I have to admit, hard pressed to keep up with them at times. Being a book worm I would be quite happy to laze on the patio with the roar of the sea below and read. Alas I was dragged out, almost kicking and screaming to see the wonderful sights, do magical things like swim with dolphins and snorkel magnificent coral, meet the awesome locals and spend copious amounts of money! So please could you all come in and have breakfast over the next few days so I can make the bank manager a little happier! Mexico was incredible but all good things must alas come to an end and I am, believe it or not, happy to be home with Amiga and back here to look after you guys.
I trust that you were well looked after while I was away, please don’t hesitate to let know if there were any problems and I promise to personally wring a few necks to make it all better!
Thanks so much to my team, Mum, Martin, Gladys, Fortune and co who kept the wheels oiled and things running smoothly!

So here we are at the month of romance and delight and what does Indulgence have to offer you this month you are wondering, well read on and will tell all!
Fetish Flea market
First off we are kick starting February with our third Fetish Flea market with coffee and cake day takes place now, now, now! 5th Feb from 14h30-17h30. I know that isn’t giving you a whole lot of notice but I also know you guys pull rabbits out of hats all the time. We chose this date as it is pretty close to Valentine’s Day so you can buy your loved ones something a little different and Risqué this year! Come along and see the selection of leather and lace, bits and bobs available. Just hang out, have a coffee and a slice of cake, browse, shop and have a little fun. Regret no under 18’s allowed! Catherine has gone the extra mile to organize this event and it promises to be bigger and better than ever before.

February 12TH Author Talk:
This month we hand over all the books we have collected to Animals in Distress. So I am now asking you to bring along, as well as your two books, one to donate and one to swap, some animal stuff…….by that I mean food, blankets, bedding, baskets, toys etc, whatever you have lying around that would make the animals lives a little easier! Animals in Distress will be here to collect everything so please expect this meeting to last about 30 minutes longer than usual!
This month’s author was with us last year as well. He was a little cagey back them about what exactly it was he did back in the day but now we know why……………he was writing his memoirs and holding all the juicy stuff back! So please welcome back to Indulgence, Michael Bowery and his book “Shred when Read”. I think this month’s author will have broad spectrum appeal to everyone and to the guys who have been in the military or wanted to be and never got there! As usual please be seated by 14h30 for the author to start promptly at 3pm, although in this case we may well hand over the stuff to Animals in Distress first. I think I am saying in any event please don’t be late

Who is Michael Bowery?
Michael Edwin Bowery was born in 1931 in North London. He survived the London ‘Blitz’ of World War II and was educated at Clark’s College, London, achieving little academically but excelling in most sports. Between 1949 and 1957 he served successively in the British Army and in London’s Metropolitan Police. In 1957 he was appointed as an Inspector of police in the British Protectorate of Nyasaland where he was commissioned in 1962 and served until Nyasaland’s independence from Britain in 1964. Between 1965 and 1969 he served in the South African Police as a Detective Warrant Officer working in the realm of serious crime. In 1969 he was recruited into the then Bureau for State Security as an intelligence officer. The Bureau later became the National Intelligence Service. For twenty years he served in covert operations targeting African liberation movements and the Soviet in Africa. In 1990 he moved to the Directorate of Covert Collection (DCC), an intelligence arm of the South African Special Forces Reconnaissance battalions. In 1996 he began writing the first of three action novels. In the same year he was asked by the ANC-led government to return to work and create and run a new covert operation. In 2000 he finally retired but continued writing. In 2009 he finished a fourth novel ‘Al Qaeda Armageddon – Target USA’ which is due to be published in 2011. Also in 2009 he completed his memoirs and this book is the result.
Author’s Note.
A year before my stint in the British Army in 1949, the West’s perceived enemy was the communism of the Soviet Union spread through Eastern Europe and then into Africa. The Cold War had begun. From that time on until 1992 Soviet communism, its myriad of front organizations and overt involvement with Africa’s liberation movements, all became my target. Almost by accident, I stumbled into the world of espionage and to my surprise found I was fairly good at it. As a case officer I ran agents in various parts of the world, targeting the Soviet and the liberation movements. Much later I worked for the new ANC-led government of South Africa. In this maelstrom of political activity in Africa my task was information collection – establishing truths, identifying threats to the society and the state that I was serving. For this I make no apology since I did the same for the ANC government, although this time, I was not aimed at communism but the emerging influence of China and the Indian Ocean states.

welcome to 20heaven

Welcome to 20Heaven

May your year be absolutely fabulous! May it be filled with love and happiness and lots and lots and lots of money and other lekker stuff that money can’t buy! Let someone else (like the bank manager) worry about the stresses for a while, nurture your love, your family and remember above all else………………….wear sunscreen J

Welcome back to everybody, I hope you had an wonderful relaxed holiday and festive season. I hope Christmas was delicious and New Year was a party of note.

Old year’s eve is a really good time to reflect on the year just passed and ponder the year going forward. What have you decided to change? I don’t make resolutions. I just make decisions to do things differently, that way when nothing changes apart from the date, I don’t feel like I have let myself down………….I have obviously re-thought the whole thing through again and my solution was…………..why fix something that ain’t broke!! Okay, not really, but you know what I mean!

I was sitting at the computer towards the end of December with a calendar in my left hand pondering the happenings @Indulgence Café for the year 2011 and I have to say we have a pretty full line up.

I am going to cram as much as possible into this year so prepare to be bombarded with social engagements at Indulgence Café this fabulous year 2011! So I have almost mapped the year out already, I know when every Author Talk is, just not who every author is. I know when Mom’s day and Dad’s day are. The Jewish Holidays, the Christian Holidays and a huge amount of public holidays! Rest assured that something will happen at THIS coffee shop every public holiday this year! No, that is a lie, the only things that will happen over the Easter and Christmas holidays is that the shop will slumber through them but as for the rest…………………party!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So after all that WHAT is happening @Indulgence in January 2011???

Our new menu is up and out already, come on in and try out some of the new items on the menu……. There is an entire section dedicated to crumpets, another to French toast and another to those Pint Sized people in your lives! Plus a new salad or two and even if an old favourite of yours is no longer on the menu…………….we will still make it for you…………all you have to do is ask!

We don’t usually entertain authors in January, however….. place drum roll here…. I have stalked Arthur Goldstuck relentlessly and he has agreed to do an extra special Author Talk @Indulgence on the 11th of January @ 15h00. This is a Tuesday folks, so please take note of that and try not to turn up on the Saturday following as neither Arthur nor I will be here! Who is Arthur Goldstuck you are wondering? Well carry on reading and I will tell you…………………….

Arthur Goldstuck

Arthur is an award-winning writer, analyst and commentator on Internet, mobile and business and consumer technologies. He is editor and columnist for a number of publications, and heads the World Wide Worx research organization, leading groundbreaking research into how hi-tech change is affecting businesses large and small.

Arthur is author of 18 books, including South Africa’s best-selling IT book yet, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Internet”.

Through Penguin Books, he has published six books on urban legends. The most recent, “The Burglar in the Bin-Bag”, appeared in 2010. It follows “The Ghost That Closed Down the Town”, published in 2006.

As for February and March 2011 we have Michael Bowery returning to speak @Indulgence again with his memoirs and Caroline Addenbrooke with her first published novel, The Gates of Hell. Even April already has an author lined up but I don’t want to overwhelm you with information or spoil you too much so early in the year so I will keep that information on ice till next month!

I have not lined anything else up for January 2011 as I will be away from the 12th to the 31st. Which does mean that you will not be able to get hold of me. However both Lollipops Catering and Indulgence Coffee Café will  continue to function none the less. Gladys, Fortune and the rest of the team will take care of anything you may need and if you have the need to get hold of me, please feel free to email me. I will be able to pick up my emails, even if I am running about 8 hours behind youJ

There are some delicious events packed into the month of romance, February 2011 for you

We are having our 3rd kinks flea market……..this is only suitable for the more risqué of you, who are so inclined to come and have a look. The event is not  open to anyone under the age of 18, so sorry no kids! Please contact Cass for more information on  cassie.kelly@gmail.com

By the way, thanks for everyone who came to Amiga’s 5th birthday party, she was spoiled rotten by all of you and we raised with your help R575 for Animals in Distress. I am very chuffed, so thanks very much! Please give yourselves a pat on the back!
