The Lollipop …………..August 2012

Rhino Mother and Child

Greetings and salutations my fine feathered friends 🙂

I am sitting in my kitchen cum dining room freezing my toes off to bring this newsletter to you nice and early. There is sooooooooooo much happening between now and the first 10 days of August that I want to get this information to you as early as possible so that you don’t miss out on a single thing!
This post is jam packed with events happening at Indulgence in the next two to three weeks and once you read about them you really won’t want to miss out, that much I promise you!
We had to unfortunately cancel our Minerals talk with Justin Glanvill last week but we will be rescheduling it as soon as possible. Maybe towards the end of August.
We at Lollipops Catered the Finale of the etv show Step Up or Step Out on Sunday night, it was a fabulous showy event and Endemol and etv really did themselves proud. The catering was awesome as well 🙂

The winners of Step Up or Step Out Thembisa Revolution

Step Up or Step Out catering for etv

This post is also the full and unabridged version of the monthly newsletter. It is getting too long to send to people at large so at least here I can post everything including pictures and the “fuller” story.
You may also have noticed that I have started putting in the Facebook links to events as well so that you can link directly to the event as posted on FB, if you are on FB that is. I hope that this will make life easier for you and provide you with a more enjoyable reading experience!
I will also be posting the Social Dinner Menus for Thursday nights in this full blog version of the newsletter for all the Thursdays in the month (if I can get my act together) as I feel that I am spamming you by sending the menu via email through every week.

Without much further ado I give you the next few weeks at a glance:
Calendar for the next 4 weeks or so:
July 26 Dinner at Indulgence, Christmas in July themed dinner
Aug 2 Dinner at Indulgence
Aug 3 Bloody Book Week event with Mark Gimenez and Andrew Brown
Aug 5 Bloody Book Week event with Jeffery Deaver and John Connolly
Aug 9 Penis…..Oops, I meant rhino talk
Aug 9 There is no dinner tonight!
Aug 16 Dinner at Indulgence
Aug 23 Dinner at Indulgence
Aug 30 Dinner at Indulgence

Dinner by candlelight at Indulgence

Dinner at Indulgence

Our Thursday night dinners are going really nicely so far. Given that it is winter I am impressed with the number of you who are braving the cold to come out. It is warm and snug on the patio with the Gladwrap embracing the outside walls (I mean this literally, the shop is plastic wrapped) and the three heaters on, all this under the red glow from the lights and the candles on the tables. Very romantic and seriously, the patio is a wonderful place to spend an evening. This past week we had an incredible young jazz band, the Peter Auret Trio come and play for us and it truly was magical.

This Thursday’s menu is Christmas in July themed with:
Phyllo Seafood parcels to start (vegetarian option available as always)
A choice of gammon or stuffed rolled turkey with roast tatties, Brussels sprouts & candied carrots!
For vegetarians we have stuffed red peppers
Christmas malva pudding with brandy custard
Best of all this is only R100 per person. Bring along some crackers and pressie for the people at your table and make it a very festive occasion!
Remember to book your table.

The Official Bloody Book Week promo image!

AuthorTalks or in this case BLOODY BOOK WEEK events

Indulgence Café is one of the hosts for some of Radio 702’s Jenny Crwys-Williams and Sunday Times, Bloody Book Week events. I gave them two dates, I asked for some really fab authors who hail from overseas and hey presto I was really lucky to be given the choices I requested!
There is a printing error on the events brochure for the first event and it should actually read Mark Gimenez not Trevor Corbett.

Author Mark Gimenez who will be at Indulgence on the 3rd of August at 2pm

Some of the books written by Mark Gimenez

Author Andrew Brown

Andrew Brown’s latest book, Solace

The Second Bloody Book Week event

The second event is brunch at Indulgence on Sunday the 5th of August but before you get to eat you have to subject yourselves to the torturous, horrid, terrible voices and stories of John Connolly and Jeffery Deaver. I have to say that again. John Connolly and Jeffery Deaver! Do I need to say more? Book your place, this event is already filling up. BOOKINGS ONLY. Brunch will be served at the tables when the authors have finished talking and are busy signing books. The cost of the event is R180 and books will be available for sale. Rhinos going head to head

Now about those Unicorns….oops, I meant rhinos

South Africa’s very own Unicorn is under attack. Our Rhinos are being poached to the point of extinction for their incredible horns. Help us contribute, in some small way, towards the conservation efforts that are being made by some very heroic organizations and people just like you and me. How can you do this? Come and spend Women’s Day with us. We are hosting an event that is open to everyone, except poachers at 10am on the 9th of August to raise awareness and hopefully to raise some money that we can contribute to the conservation of these incredibly majestic, almost prehistoric looking animals. This is a big event for us, we would like to make some small impact and do some good in any way we can.
We will have Vanessa Bezuidenhout from the Endangered Wildlife Trust as a guest speaker. Hopefully someone from the Lawrence Anthony Foundation will be here as well to chat about his book, The Last Rhino, a wildlife vet and possibly a surprise guest speaker as well. There will be incredible ceramic pots from ceramic artist Anne Rimbault, paintings, drawings and other rhino bits and pieces for sale. A huge chunk of the proceeds of these sales will go to the EWT so please dig deep and bring those credit cards to the party and go shopping! We will bring lunch to your table as well for the princely sum of R80 for two courses! The Lawrence Anthony book will also be on sale on the day.
Bookings pretty please. The event starts at 10am and ends around lunch time and is a public holiday so you can sit and chill with us……………..

Time Marches on…………March 2012

Greetings and Salutations wonderful People of the Indulgence and Lollipops Family!
(wow, that was a mouthful)
Happy March!

Instead of worrying about the Ides of March I think we should be marching with the faeries, eating carrots with the bunnies, hunting Easter eggs with the kids, running with the wolves, dancing to the music and in some cases listening to the voices in our heads. The last one of course not being applicable to axe murderers, psychopaths and bunny boilers because who knows where that could end! (Also if you are a little worried about the Ides of March remember NEVER to turn your back on a friend)
Am really sorry to do this to you but this newsletter is very long, there is so much going on and happening in March so I am putting the calendar at the top of the newsletter for a change in case you don’t have the time or energy to plow your way through the rest…………………

Thank you everyone for the good wishes for Indulgence’s 6th birthday and to those of you who were at our party, you were awesome braving the storm. We had a blast, thank you for spending the afternoon with us, we are going to do this again next year without a doubt! Anyone who wasn’t here well just make sure you are here next year! I can’t say thank you enough to Adrian Ziller and all his musical mates who helped us pass the afternoon away with their laid back tunes and to Pat Sloane for taking such awesome pics which are up on the Indulgence  Cafe and Lollipops Catering pages on Facebook! I have included a few below for you to look at as well.

Jodene Sheer of Jodene.co.za posted in her blog on 25 Feb the following:

Animals in Distress joined us on the 12th for the AuthorTalk with Charmaine Pauls and David Bullard during which I made a complete tit of myself in front of the entire audience of 75 odd people and went blank when talking about David Bullard. Just couldn’t remember his name for about 40 seconds or so and even with Charmaine saying David, David and David in my left ear I was thinking to myself “what is she on about, who is David?”
I have to say that I had a fabulous giggle about it for the next few minutes and old what’s his name didn’t seem too offended! We also had a VIP visitor in the form of Bruce Sutherland who was our January Author. Put David and Bruce together and you have a recipe for two naughty boys brewing up trouble! As usual I am digressing because I was telling you about Animals in Distress. They collected a wonderful amount of books and assorted other goodies from us, blankets, baskets etc and Amiga handed over her pocket-money collected from her birthday, a very nice tidy sum of R500. So well done everyone, please pat yourselves on the back and thank you to everyone who contributed to our collection, you guys rock!

Charmaine Pauls wrote us a fabulous thank you in her blog http://www.charmainepauls.com/charmainesblog/?p=204

AuthorTalk
10th of March we bring you Liezl Thom with her book Shattered Lives about Cezanne Visser aka Advocate Barbie! Given all the hype about a possible early parole that is going on at the moment this one should be very interesting! Do I need to say more?
About the author:
Liezl Thom covered the sex crimes trial of Cezanne Visser and her co-accused, Dirk Prinsloo from day 1 for Eyewitness News. Listeners of Talk Radio 702, 567 Cape Talk, 94.7 Highveld Stereo and 94.5 Kfm were simultaneously repulsed and enthralled by the salacious details revealed in the courtroom – both when Prinsloo and Visser were standing trial together and later, after Prinsloo skipped bail and fled the country, when Visser remained alone in the dock.
By her own admission, Liezl had to sanitize her daily accounts of the trial to make it suitable for her radio audiences. In Shattered Lives, the Story of Advocate Barbie she tells the story in its shocking entirety, with added insights from her co-author and state witness, Laurie Pieters.

Liezl Thom Shattered Lives, The Advocate Barbie Story
Liezl resigned from Eyewitness News in 2010 – but her association with the brand continues to this day. She regularly stands in for Kate Turkington on Sunday nights’ Believe it or Not on 702 and still does the occasional story for EWN on a freelance basis. The rest of her time is divided between her life coaching practice, writing and being a mom to her two boys

Fetish & Kink Flea Market
On St Patrick’s Day, the 17th of March we will hold our first Fetish & Kink Market of the year! Yes, I do know this is not an event that sits comfortably with everyone but it is a very relaxed, very fun experience and you get a glimpse of a chunk of life you know absolutely nothing about. What is life if we are not being exposed to new and different things all the time. Every day we should learn something new even if it is just the name of that really ugly spider crawling up your wall right now. So join us, come browse maybe buy an item or two, make a few new friends, see a few old friends, eat a burger, have a slice of cake and top it all off with a delicious cappuccino. I will see what the story is with scrounging up some green beer to dish out on the day or just bring your own green beer along. Leprechauns are welcome but under 18’s aren’t, sorry about that, so no dressing your kids up as the little guy and trying to sneak them in, I SEE LITTLE PEOPLE!
2-5pm, dress casual, no entry charge just pay for what you buy and bring loads of cash with! Did you know that St Paddy

is the patron saint of kinks…………no? Well neither did he!

Human Rights Day

open to suggestions……………….got any?

Holidays:

The Jewish holiday of Pesach falls at the exact same time as Easter this year. The first night of Pesach being April 6th which is Good Friday. So to all of you dear ones, Happy Pesach and Happy Easter! Seeing as I am covering both bases at the same time in this one post  let me just say that a range of small Easter eggs will be in stock in the next two to three weeks and if any of our Jewish clients would like and food for Pesach I am busy with the price list at the moment. Please feel free to let me know if you would like me to mail the price list to you! Whilst on the subject I wrote a fun blog on some of the more traditional Jewish foods based on a short email that I received.

If you feel like reading it, please have a look at the post prior to this one entitled “Traditional-jewish-food-or-weapons-of-mass-destruction-hahahah”

I am going to be away from the 31st of March to the 10th of April. While I am away please deal directly with the kitchen on 011 782 5063 or email me but allow me time to respond as I am not in the country and have limited access to the internet. Indulgence and Lollipops Catering will be closed from Friday the 6th of April and will re-open on the 10th of April. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause!
If you are traveling be safe, if you are staying home eat copious amounts of Easter eggs, especially the marshmallow ones and if you are indulging in large doses of matzos…………well, need I say more

The Month of Love & other Delights

Helllooooooooooo Everyone

January is pretty much us and the month of love almost upon us! What do you have planned for Valentine’s Day? Girls do you realize that as this is a leap year you are allowed and encouraged to take the leap and ask your man to marry you? I had two offers of marriage today but I think they were only because they both need someone to cook for them and they thought I owned the Lollipop Lounge! Poor boys, Lollipops Caters to your other needs! This month my baby girl, Indulgence, celebrates her 6th birthday! She should have started grade 1 primary school with all the other kids this year but I decided that she is constantly learning in the school of life and for this beautiful girl a little bit more home schooling is not going to be a bad thing, plus the text books are a whole bunch cheaper and we won’t mention the uniforms!! Come celebrate with us! Come raise your glass and toast my beautiful non-furry girl on the 25th of February from 2pm to 5pm! There will be loads of pink bubbly on ice and cupcakes galore to feast upon and best of all this is we are not charging you one cent to come to our little party! Just pop in and have a glass with us! Email me to say if you are coming so I know how many bottles of bubbly to buy and how many cupcakes to ice!

So what else is happening @ Indulgence this month of love:

AuthorTalk

This month’s AuthorTalk is a gala affair with not one but two authors on February 11th. This is THE month of the year that we hand over all the books that you guys have helped us collect over the past 12 months. Heading up our fabulous double bill is Charmaine Pauls, a South African girl living in Chile who has just published her first book. Charmaine is taking time to make her debut appearance during her fleeting trip to South Africa. She will followed by the never short of controversy, David Bullard who really needs no further introduction as far as I am concerned! For this event we are doing things a little differently so please take note of the following: There will be a two course plated set menu @ R75 per head. There will of course be a choice of red meat, white meat or vegetarian so no one will go hungry followed by a delicious desert as only Indulgence can! Serving lunch from 12h30 BOOKINGS BOOKINGS BOOKINGS only please!

Both authors will have books on sale and of course they will quite happily sign them for you. I will see if I can persuade them to each give us one to hand out in the draw! As far as Animals In Distress is concerned please bring along whatever you can that will help an animal in distress from blankets, food, toys, kennels etc! They are happy to take anything that we can give them that will help our furry friends! Amiga will hand over her pocket money that was raised from her birthday party in Decembe. And then of course this is a brand new year for collecting books so remember as always to bring along your two books, one to swap and one to donate as we begin collecting a whole new year of books for Amiga’s charity of choice!

About our authors:

Charmaine Pauls South African born Charmaine Pauls followed a career in all the facets of her communications degree, including public relations, journalism, advertising, and brand marketing. Her debut novel, Between Yesterday and Tomorrow, was released in August 2011. Her second novel, Between Fire and Ice, will be released by Melange Books in August 2012. She currently resides in Chile with her husband and two children

David Bullard South Africa’s best loved celebrity “racist”. Author of South Africa’s most talked about newspaper column (Out to Lunch), TV presenter, after dinner speaker and exposer of humbuggery. Loathes political correctness and lefties. Now writing for Playboy magazine every month.

Valentine’s Day

“I love you in a place where there’s no space or time

I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine

And when my life is over

Remember when we were together

We were alone and I was singing this song for you

We were alone and I was singing this song for you” 1972 The Carpenters

Unfortunately Valentine’s Day falls during the week this y

ear so the best I can offer you on the actual day is my love! Hahaha, on the other hand of you feel like going out to breakfast we will open at 7.30am so you can bring your girlfriend, wife or secretary for a quickie breakfast on the way to work. Nothing says I love you better than crispy bacon and scrambled eggs! We have a very romantic range of heart shaped cakes, cupcakes, heart-shaped biscuits, chocolate roses and gingerbread men with big hearts if you fancy sending some to the office, the school or your home! Make my life a tad easier and order early so we can avoid disappointing anyone

! (by the way I love flowers, Lindt chocolate, Dune perfume and like most women gold, silver and diamonds work fabulously )

Coffee, Kink, Buddha, Cake and Killing Kebble Nov 2011

Very, very hot greetings and salutations today puddings! J

As I sit down to write this newsletter at 9.20am it is already 30 degrees outside in Jozi today and it is getting hotter! Just looked at the weather forecast for the next 5 days and there isn’t a drop of rain lurking nearby but there are some clouds! (however the newspaper says differently – there will be severe thunder storms from tomorrow but who knows who is right) The temperature looks like it will remain in the high 20’s and early 30’s! Whoopi!  So remember to wear sun screen and drink loads and loads of water!

Now that my weather report is over, missed my calling apparently, look out Simon Geer.

The Coffee Pot:

I know it is hot and coffee is so not what you are thinking about right now but I have to tell you about the plungers again! They have taken off fabulously and so for November we are going to introduce you to a fabulous Indian coffee that is both full bodied and medium roasted and delicious!

About the coffee …………………

From mystical India comes a medium roasted medium bodied single origin coffee aptly called Indian Monsoon. Full of flavour this coffee will have your taste buds begging for more whilst the superb aromas will have your mind whisked off to somewhere between the eternal snows of the Himalayas in the north to the cultivated peninsula of the far south. This beautiful coffee is 100% Arabica and because it has been roasted locally it freshness is guaranteed.

Plungers make around 3 cups of coffee and cost just R25. You will also find the coffee in 250gram bags for sale on our shelves at R65 per bag!

Fetish & Kink Flea Market:

Just a quick reminder about the market happening this Saturday, 29 Oct at Indulgence from 2pm to 5pm. This is not for everyone’s taste but it is an eye opener for the uninitiated and those looking for a little something else in life! So if whips and chains are not your thing but you are interested in seeing them pop in and say hi, have a look what is on offer! Have something to eat, make some new friends, browse and have fun! Regret NO under 18’s allowed! And while  you are here try our delicious Iced Coffee Granita!

AuthorTalks:

Again this month we are going to spoil you rotten with two AuthorTalks. The first of which is on November 5th  with Daniel Jardim…………This book is a real treat, a vegetarian cookbook with a difference. Also showcased in the book is work by potter Anthony Shapiro, the pottery teacher that I go to for classes

Daniel Jardim &The Cake the Buddha Ate: More Quiet Food

Daniel Jardim  hails from a family of cooks headed by his mother, well-known Portuguese chef and cookbook writer, Mimi Jardim.  He lived in the UK for 11 years, where he  ran a private practice in Nutrition and Massage Therapy.  After his return to South Africa he manned the kitchen at the Buddhist Retreat Centre in Ixopo sharing the food that he usually served for friends and family.

The Cake the Buddha AteMore quiet Food asks us to change our attitude to this seemingly mundane human need and make it into a joyful, flavourful journey, full of delights and surprises.  Food is one of the first casualties of our hectic pace of life – in the way we eat it as well as in the way we prepare it.

There is more to the book than outstanding food.  The book has photographs, showcasing the ecological beauty of the BRC, anecdotes, poems and haikus all of which offer a glimpse of the Centre’s magnificent setting and the range of workshops and retreats conducted there.

The bulk of Daniel’s time is dedicated to teaching and he conducts a number of retreats, workshops and demonstrations in Gauteng and KZN. The focus is on healthy eating according to the seasons and he is fast becoming a well-respected teacher with a flair for interesting, but unpretentious vegetarian cuisine that bursts with colour and vitality.

I am going to make a special vegan dish to accompany this talk so if you fancy eating a different kind of lunch with no animal products or by-products please order our lunch special on the day!

Then author number two on the 19th of November is Mandy Wiener with Killing Kebble! This event is bookings only please.

We were fully booked a week ahead of the Piet Byleveld talk this past week end, I had to turn away at least 20 people and in the end I had quite a few no shows and ended up getting into trouble for having the audacity to voice my opinion. Although my comments were not aimed at any table in particular one table took huge offence and has now deleted me from their Facebook profiles. What a fascinating world we live in today, you no longer have to end friendships you just delete the offending parties off your different profiles and they cease to exist. I think it is quite a fascinating phenomenon actually.  Anyway as usual I digress. What I am trying to say is if you book, please remember to come or you end up disappointing someone else who I had to turn away. Unfortunately I have a tendency to be somewhat unsympathetic  to people who let me down but if you give me a heads up that you cannot make it , that is also much very much appreciated (even if I don’t sound it at the time)

Mandy will start her talk at around 2.15pm please be seated well in advance if you are coming for lunch. There will be absolutely no service during the talk.

Mandy Wiener and Killing Kebble:

In September 2005 one of South Africa’s most prominent mining magnates and businessmen, Brett Kebble, was killed on a quiet suburban street in Johannesburg. The top-level investigation into the case that followed was a tipping point for democratic South Africa, exposing the corrupt relationship between the country’s Chief of Police and Interpol President, Jackie Selebi, and suave Mafioso Glenn Agliotti.

A lawless Johannesburg underbelly was revealed – dominated by drug lords, steroid-filled bouncers, an international smuggling syndicate, a shady security unit moonlighting for the police and sinister self-serving sleuths abusing state agencies.

Indemnified by an agreement struck with the state, Kebble’s killers Mikey Schultz, Nigel McGurk and Faizel “Kappie” Smith come clean to Mandy Wiener in exclusive interviews about the events of the night Kebble was shot dead. As Wiener unpacks the chilling events we are given insight into the accounts of the life paths leading the “bungling assassins” to Kebble’s killing. The man accused of orchestrating Kebble’s murder, Glenn Agliotti has provided Wiener with exclusive access to his story, as have a cast of other characters whose versions of the events are as yet untold.

As always please bring along two books per person one to swap and one to donate……………THIS IS THE TICKET PRICE FOR THIS TALK, NO BOOKS NO ENTRYJ

The books are collected and in February we hand over all the collected books to Animals in Distress, a most worthy charity of Amiga’s choice.

AuthorTalks…………yip two of them and both real corkers!
The first one is on the 15th of October at 2pm with Athele Oosterbroek sister to the slain photographer Ken Oosterbroek. Ken was featured in the Bang, Bang Club (you guys remember we had ? here last year to talk about the book and the movie that has just come out) Please note this is the 3rd Saturday in October. I have moved it because of the Jewish holiday that falls on the 8th. This sounds like an interesting read, especially for those who are spiritually inclined. Please book with me!
It takes honesty, guts and sustained hard work to find and give birth to the authentic you. We make the same mistakes again and again until we don’t. We think
we’ve arrived only to find we’re back where we started. And we may well give up entirely or feel that we’re failing because all the same things keep coming around again and again.
This is an autobiography of the brave and honest kind. Athelé – metaphysician, spiritual teacher and professional numerologist – takes you on a guided tour of some of the events, processes and relationships that formed and expressed her obsessive drive for approval and its resultant co-dependency and self-sabotaging behaviours. She gives an open-hearted recounting of how difficult it can be to become the person you are meant to be, especially when dealing with the dynamics of close and often difficult relationships – in her case, the relationship with her father and the men
in her life. At the core of this book lies Athelé’s burning hope that the reader will evolve through understanding where she went wrong, rather than have to struggle themselves through endless passages to arrive at the same simple, but life-changing truths. Each chapter explores a central esoteric theme – forgiveness, healing, truth, release, understanding, synthesis, courage, transformation
and independence – and suggests practical shortcuts to those spiritual destinations. From the quiet place where soul meets spirit and the ego disappears, Athelé gives you profound insight into what it means to live consciously and how to maintain that state of grace.

Then on 22nd October @2pm we have retired SAPS detective extraordinaire Piet Byleveld with the book written about him by Hanlie Retief. Hanlie is Cape Town based so Piet himself will be here to chat to you about the book and you are welcome to ask him questions………………… This is a bookings only event, no walk ins will be able to squeeze in on the day so please get your booking in early. The usual format will apply here those who haven’t eaten when the speaker starts will have to wait until he is finished to get their food. Books will be available and Piet will be happy to sign them for you!
Random House Struik Press Release
Recently retired, detective Piet Byleveld’s name has become legendary. He is the man who solved some of South Africa’s most famous crime investigations, including the Leigh Matthews kidnapping. He has a 100% success rate with serial murders. In this book, Rapport journalist Hanlie Retief, who had exclusive access to Byleveld’s dossiers, writes about twenty of the most notorious serial-killer cases and many other murders Byleveld solved. She weaves into it the story of Byleveld’s own life. The book includes full-colour photographs from police records throughout.
Author Hanlie Retief is a journalist for Rapport. She is known for her interviews with well-known people.

As always please bring along two books per person one to swap and one to donate……………THIS IS THE TICKET PRICE FOR THIS TALK, NO BOOKS NO ENTRY
The books are collected and in February we hand over all the collected books to Animals in Distress, a most worthy charity of Amiga’s choice.
Both authors will start at 2pm so please be seated and comfy with orders in well before that time!

Fetish Flea Market
On October 29th we bring you our 6th and best Fetish and Kink Flea Market yet! This is the last one for the year and is going to rock your socks off, if that is your thing at least. Greetings and salutations fabulous People

Happy spring Puddings!

This is feeling like a long newsy, newsy newsletter so please make yourself comfortable before you begin reading.

Thank you for the incredible turnout on Saturday 20th August  for the talk by McIntosh Polela. The talk was fantastic and the audience, well you rocked. Give yourselves a round of applause.

So happy spring, finally the air outside begins to warm up, the sun is coming up earlier,  blossoms are showing up on trees all over the place, birds are building nests and love is in the air. Okay, I am getting a little carried away now so let me get down to business.

September is National Arbor Month and I thought as a really nice gesture we could attempt to raise some money to buy  some indigenous trees to donate to the city to a community project of some sort. My friend Malcolm works for City Parks and can point us in the right direction as well as ensure the trees get purchased and planted in the correct place. I am very keen to do this and hope that you are as well. If anyone has any ideas about how we should go about this please let me know and I can get the ball rolling!! (ASAP)

It is starting to warm up nicely and I still have quite a bit of soup in the freezer so I was wondering if anyone wants to purchase any at half price. The usual price is R40/R45 per liter but for the month of September I will be selling it off at R20 a bucket! I really need to do this so I can clear some space in the freezer for ice-cream! Yip, we are going to be making our own delicious full cream full sugar ice cream for the summer and if there enough time some sorbet as well! So please take some of the soup off my hands, it really is incredibly good value and  you can always  eat it cold in summer (well some of it at least)

Lollipops Catering also got a nice little mention in the online EatIn magazine this past week, so I am quite chuffed about that! The link below will take you there, just look at the article on caterers

@Indulgence this month:

Alternatively order her/him a dozen of our incredibly gorgeous  cupcakes and we will deliver them to the office for youJ

AuthorTalks

In September we have two AuthorTalks booked, one for the regular Saturday afternoon on the 10th of September and a second for the Heritage Day holiday on the 24th of September.

I am hoping to bring you a double bill for the 10th, two fabulous authors for the price of two books. Not a bad deal me thinks. As yet the second author remains unconfirmed so let me just give you a little info on our first author for the 10th, Hamilton Wende

Hamilton Wende is a freelance writer and television producer based in Johannesburg.  He is a regular contributor to From Our Own Correspondent on Radio 4 on the BBC.  He has also contributed to the BBC World Service programme Letter.  He is a columnist for The Star in Johannesburg and his articles have appeared in many international and South African newspapers and magazines, including National Geographic Traveler, The Chicago Tribune, GQ, Maclean’s Magazine in Canada, TravelAfrica in the UK, The New Zealand Herald, The Buffalo News in the US, The Sunday Times, Business Day, The Sunday Independent in Johannesburg and many others.

He has been a guest on The Editors on the SABC, and has been a guest lecturer at the Department of Journalism at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, the  English Department at The University of Cape Town and at The University of the Witwatersrand, at the Durban Institute of Technology and at the Cape Town Press Club, and the Muthaiga Club in Nairobi.  He has also appeared on a number of radio and television programmes including MSNBC, SABC TV,  AM Live and on Radio 702.

In television he has worked for a number of international networks including CNN, BBC, NBC, ABC (Australia), SBS (Australia), NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) Al Jazeera English and a number of others.  He has covered fifteen different wars in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.  The countries he has worked in include Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, Rwanda, Congo, Burundi, Sierra Leone, Angola, Sudan, Eritrea, Kuwait, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan.

Journey Into Darkness, a documentary on the genocide in Rwanda he worked on for the BBC with producer David Harrison and correspondent Fergal Keane won the 1994 Royal Television Society’s International Current Affairs AwardA Life Less Fortunate, a film on children in South African prisons he worked on with Belinda Hawkins of SBS won the 1999 United Nations Association of Australia Media Award.

He has written six books the one being featured is:

House of War A love story and thriller about searching for the lost diaries of Alexander the Great in the badlands of northern Afghanistan while being hunted by Al Qaeda. published by Penguin in 2009.  It was long-listed for the Sunday Times Fiction Award in 2010.

Doesn’t that just sound fabulous and girls he has that sort of James Bondy look……well that’s my opinion at least! As soon as I have some clarity on the possible second author for the same day I will let you know! Table bookings worked really well for the last AuthorTalk so I would like to continue the trend into the future, please book a table for all future AuthorTalksJ

Then on the 24th of September we are having a second AuthorTalk with author Craig Higginson and his book The Landscape Painter. Below is information about the book and the author.

It is winter in London in 1947. When Arthur Bailey, an elderly painter who lives alone, catches sight of a young woman, Felicity, about to move into the neighbouring bed-sit, he is stirred to recall in haunting detail a long-suppressed narrative. The Landscape Painter is a double tale of obsession, betrayed trust and irrepressible hope, which emerges as Arthur’s story unfolds. As a young, brilliant landscape painter he travelled to South Africa in 1898 in pursuit of his best friend’s sister, the beautiful and mysterious Carwyn Hamilton. Carwyn’s subsequent shocking betrayal led Arthur down a dark path of humiliation and haunted him for the next fifty years. As Arthur delves ever deeper into his most intimate thoughts and desires, the past and present come together in a series of surprising turns and parallels and we meet a range of memorable characters – from the malevolent German governess, Miss Klimt, to Carwyn’s flirtatious and increasingly senile grandmother, Mutti. Finally, Arthur is forced to confront Felicity with the irreducible damage done to him. From the gold-crazed streets of early Johannesburg to the epic battlefields of the Anglo-Boer War, and the austerity of post-Second World War Britain, The Landscape Painter is a spectacular historical novel packed with wit and insight and crafted in Higginson’s lyrical and sinuous but surgical prose.

Craig Higginson is the Literary Manager of the Market Theatre in Johannesburg and teaches creative writing at the University of the Witwatersrand. In February 2010, Craig’s novel Last Summer was released to critical and popular acclaim. He is also well known as a playwright. The Girl in the Yellow Dress has had sold-out seasons at the Grahamstown Arts Festival, the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town and the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh. It is currently on at the Market Theatre. His first play, Dream of the Dog, appeared at the Trafalgar Studios in London’s West End in a sold-out production featuring Janet Suzman.

What an incredible double bill we have lined up for the month of September and I promise to let you know soonest if it is to be a triple bill!

As always please bring along two lekker books, one to swap and one to donate! The cause is a good one I promise. Please note that authors now start at 2.15pm promptly!

All events are posted on Facebook as well

Whomever it turns out to be will, I promise be just as fabulous and fascinating as all our previous authors. tut tut it’s July already!

Greetings and salutations to you, my fellow ice lollies and frozen popsicles 
I hope that you are loving winter’s cold embrace at the moment. No, don’t shake your head, winter is almost over the solstice has passed and summer is on the way back. I know it doesn’t feel like it now but soon you will be complaining to me that it is too hot, too wet and when is there going to be a little respite from the heat
July is a mere few days away, have you RICA’d your cell phones yet? Traders have you RICA’d the sim cards in the credit card machines? Heaven forbid they should cease to work on the 1st of July, just in time for the week end! Note to self………..go RICA your sim Mandi!

So June is almost behind us and what a month it was at Indulgence! We had two fabulous authors grace our floor, Fiona Snyckers and Jo-Anne Richards, both these ladies were incredible to be around, informative, friendly, intelligent and incredibly engaging! I only had a back view of Jo-Anne because the shop was so packed I couldn’t get to the front to take pictures! Then this past weekend we had the 4th or 5th, I have now lost count, Kink and Fetish Flea Market which was a huge success with all the traders doing some business and the coffee shop doing a roaring trade. We lit a fire outside and the wind very politely died down for the afternoon so we could enjoy the winter sunshine!

The shop freezer is bulging at the seams again. We have to keep re-stocking it with soups and ready-made meals. At the moment there is ox-tail, lamb curry, beef curry and beef lasagna in abundance! Don’t cook when we can cook for you! The biscuit shelves are also groaning under the weight of the wonderful stock our kitchen keeps producing so come and stock up today! A quick reminder about the 5 day meal packs we do, aimed mainly towards the elderly. We prepare these for collection on a Monday afternoon, 5 different meals for you to take home and freeze for just R150 for the pack. Great value and fabulously convenient. We don’t offer you a choice in the meals but you are welcome to tell us if there is something you don’t or cannot eat.

Is there anyone who would like to play chess? We would like to start a chess hang out at Indulgence one afternoon or morning a week. This is open to all levels of chess playing individuals….apart from Olympians Author Diana Duff is looking to get this going ASAP so get in touch with me post haste!

So what is happening @Indulgence this month:
Again I am going to spoil you with two authors in one month you lucky puddings!!
On the 9th of July we have author and journalist Nikki Temkin coming to chat to us about her book, Jozi Chic. This is a one stop guide to all the hottest places in our beloved city of gold, Johannesburg.
A brief bio about Nikki
Nikki Temkin barely passed home economics at school but excelled at creative writing, which set the tone for her future as a young woman
determined to become a paid writer and a better cook.
Her colourful career has included a stint as an advertising copywriter, a TV producer/screenwriter, website editor and various other jobs in the media industry. Over the last eight years she has written prolifically for magazines and newspapers; her longest gig was with The Sunday Times Magazine as TV columnist, critic and features writer. Other than living in the UK while completing her Master’s degree in 1997, Nikki has always lived in Johannesburg, through each of this exciting city’s incarnations.

Here comes my usual blurb…………please be seated by 14h30, the author will start promptly at 3pm. Don’t worry the patio will be heated and if it is on the cold side we will set up in the shop instead, there are also blankies available to put on your laps!
Please, please, please remember to bring along your two books. One of these is to swap and the other is to donate. In February we will hand over all the collected books to Animals in Distress, Amiga’s charity of choice! Please support this very worthwhile cause. Books really are the price of entry into this event, the authors give us their time, sometimes they sell a few books, Indulgence just provides a venue so your books really are important to us and the animals. Amiga will thank you later.

At the end of the month 30 July, author Mike Nicol is coming up from Cape Town to launch his new book Black Heart. He was so blown away by you guys the last time he was here that he is coming back to visit Indulgence specifically! Is that not awesome?! Mike will start at 2pm, this is a whole hour earlier than usual so please bear that in mind!!
Mike Nicol is a full-time writer. He is the author of seven novels, five of which have been published in both the UK and the US, and have been translated into several languages. He lives in Cape Town
Internationally acclaimed, and regarded by many to be one of South Africa’s top crime thriller writers, Mike Nicol concludes his Revenge Trilogy with the fast-paced, compelling Black Heart.
Published in the UK as well, the trilogy sees characters Mace Bishop and Pylon Bishop again making their appearance as in Payback and Killer Country, books one and two of the series.
Pitted against archenemy Sheemina February, Mace is in the kill zone when his and Pylon’s security company is contracted to provide security to a local arms designer tendering to supply a weapons system to the SA navy. The tender process is fraught with danger and bribes and threats abound. Enter the National Intelligence Agency that puts pressure on Mace and Pylon to steal the weapons system. Gradually, the hidden hand of Sheemina February becomes all too clear.
Hailed by John Connolly as one of the brightest thriller writing talents of the last decade, Nicol brings to a nail-biting close the story of Mace and Pylon with this riveting grand finale.

June bugs

Good morning  puddings and pies

Happy June bugs to you!

I am sitting here writing this newsletter with what feels like icicles attached to my hands. I am thinking that writers are very dedicated people to write for hours in winter. That just takes huge dedication when it’s cold and I think even more dedication when the weather is fabulous outside and you are inside writing. However I suppose in summer you can move outside to write with an extension cord. I seriously am not going to be doing that for you today. Let me set the scene for you I am sitting at my desk at home with socks, slippers, track suits pants, t-shirt, sweatshirt and a pashmina wrapped around my neck. Add to the mix a brightly coloured hand knitted throw that my mum made for me keeping my lap warm. My hair is standing on end still and my glasses are perched on the end of my red nose. I think frost bite will be setting in shortly. Adele is singing “Someone like you”  gently in the background.  What I think I am trying to say is that this is going to be a very quickly written newsletter just so that I can go back to the snugness of my bed and cuddle up to Madam Amiga with her warm fur and cold nose. She is so much better than an electric blanket or hot water bottle

Indulgence has donned her winter curtains complete with sinkers to hold them down in the wind. The heaters are out and if I can remember I will take the blankies to work tomorrow for you to keep your laps warm. There is loads of hot chocolate in stock with heaps of marshmallows so no excuse to stay away! Thick soups are on offer daily with chunks of our own home baked bread and hot casseroles will be on the specials menu daily for the duration of the cold weather. ! We will keep you warm and well fed, we promise!

So what is happening @ Indulgence this June for you:

Author talks!! Yes talks for more than one, again we have two to offer you! Two of SA’s top female writers will grace our warm patio this month. The first of which is Fiona Snyckers on Saturday, the 11th of June. And the second is Jo-Anne Richards on the 16th of June public holiday!  I do have to repeat myself here, sorry in advance. Fiona will start at 15h00 on Saturday 11th June. Jo-Anne with start @ 13h30 on Thursday June 16th.  Please as always remember to bring along your two books, one to swap and one to donate. Both of our writers this month are incredibly talented and incredibly deserving of our support so please come along and give them your rapt attention!

Fiona Snyckers:

I asked Fiona for a short bio and she was very obliging

Here is my short bio: “Fiona Snyckers is the author of ‘Trinity Rising’ and ‘Trinity On Air’, published by Jonathan Ball; as well as of the ‘Sisterz’ series of mobile phone novels commissioned by the Shuttleworth Foundation.  She lives in Johannesburg.”

I am attaching pics of both my books because I would like to talk about them as a series.

Jo-Anne Richards:

Jo-Anne was a little more forthcoming with her bio:

Jo-Anne Richards is the author of four novels. Her first was the critically acclaimed bestseller, The Innocence of Roast Chicken,, originally published in London by Headline Review, and rereleased by Rebel-e in 2011.

Innocence was short-listed for the M-Net Book Prize and nominated for the Impac International Dublin Literary Award. It was chosen as a Dillon’s Debut in London, to be showcased as an “outstanding first novel”. When it was first published, it reached number one on the South African bestseller list in the week it appeared and remained there for fifteen weeks.

Her other books are My Brother’s Book, published by Picador Africa in March 2008, Touching the Lighthouse, Headline Review, and Sad at the Edges. Her short stories have been included in six collections.

She teaches creative writing, online and face to face, through www.allaboutwritingcourses.com. She lectures at Wits University in the Honours programme in Journalism & Media Studies.

Also at Indulgence this month is the Fetish Flea Market and kink fair! I know that this is not an event for everyone but it is the only one of its kind in Jozi, it only happens every three  months and there is always something new for you to look at so please pop along and support our stall holders! The market is only open on Saturday afternoon from 2pm to 5pm. Come peruse the stalls, bump into your friends, have some lunch or a slice of one of our very delicious cakes and just hang out. It is good unwholesome funJ Regret no under 18’s allowed. So put June 25th in your diary and come visit.

Our freezer is currently stocked with all manner of delicious goodies. There is a large variety of soups and frozen meals in different sizes. Right now there are lamb shanks slow roasted, soft and delicious and packed in twos for your convenience. There is also pickled fish, chicken livers peri-peri and duck and cherry pie. Yesterday we put chicken and mushroom pasta bakes in as well!. So there is something for everyone in the freezer. Why cook when Indulgence and Lollipops can do it for you!

And that is me done, taking the ice blocks attached to the ends of my legs back to bed. Have an awesome week!

Remember to keep believing in yourself, love yourself because if you don’t……………….well you are missing out!
