The Lollipop November 2012

Greetings, Greetings and More Greetings 🙂

This shop is positively bulging at the seams with new and exciting stock so before you do your Christmas and gift shopping anywhere else pop in here to take a quick squizz around. We have everything from handbags and sweets to ceramics and paintings and of course there is the awesome Amiga T-Shirt available as well. The cost is R195, sizes range from small to 3XL. In our continuing support of Animals in Distress, R10 from the sale of every T-shirt will be donated to them. Hopefully by January/February of 2013 we will be able to hand over huge gobs of money and all the books we have collected at our annual gala event to kick the year off. Amiga will of course have her birthday party in early December and as usual we will collect money and other goodies for Animals in Distress at the same time. Stick with us and help us to support of furry friends in need.
Did you happen to catch the article in the Randburg Sun and the Northcliff Melville Times about the Amiga T-shirt and what she is doing for charity?

This article appeared in the Northcliff Melville Times on Tuesday 23rd of October 2012

If you haven’t as yet organized catering or a venue for your year-end function you are running out of time fast so please get in touch with us as a matter of hurry up if we can be of assistance to you…it is what we do.

We had great times in October with the Racheltjie De Beer book, the Kink Market, which wasn’t as busy as I had hoped it would be but it did clash with the Currie cup final and Jacaranda Pops, and the weatehr wasn’t that fantastic either. However the stalls were fabulous and everyone sold some goodies, so I am happy with the way it went! Our first ComicTalk with Scott from Cosmic Comics, South Africa also went pretty well and we are looking forward to the November one. With a little luck we can turn the comic talks into a fabulous monthly event on our calendar.

I had thought that come November we would be slowing our in-house events down a little but boy was I wrong, we are going full steam ahead into November with all guns blazing and some really exciting events happening. So please read on…………………

When we began our “book club” journey 6 years ago, Melinda Ferguson was our very first author with her first book, Smacked. I think it was incredibly brave or her to join us for an event that none of us knew was going to be a success or not. Well it was, I think so at least. Now 50 odd authors later on the 10th of October Melinda is coming back with her brand new book, The Kelly Khumalo Story………………… .

The Kelly Khumalo Story by Melinda Ferguson

November 10th Kelly Khumalo’s rags-to-riches and back to rags story

It includes a dark time in the singer’s career when she had to go back home to her mother’s RDP house with her Hummer parked in the small yard as a reminder of her once lavish lifestyle. The story of the recovering drug addict and singer is all too familiar, with elements of the fall and darkness of a broken star. The author, Melinda Ferguson, has only dangled a carrot in front of the reader as Khumalo’s voice lacks conviction in the book. The Kelly Khumalo Story, already available in bookshops, will be launched at the end of the month. It tells the tale of two former drug addicts. Ferguson, a reformed addict and True Love features editor, tells her story alongside Khumalo’s. “I told Melinda a lot of things and she became a part of my life,” said Khumalo, explaining the format. Apart from events including Khumalo’s drug addiction, alleged abusive relationship with ex-lover Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye, who fathered her son Christian, and lying on national television that she was a virgin, what stands out is how Khumalo regressed – from riches to rags, from her classy Bassonia flat to an RDP house – after her addiction had ravaged her fortunes. Khumalo returns home to her mother’s two-roomed house in Spruitview, Ekurhuleni, to add to the already full household. The Hummer parked in the tiny gateless garden all but dwarfs the small two-roomed RDP-style brick home. The house belongs to Kelly’s mother, Ntombi. Meanwhile, Maarohanye and Themba Tshabalala – who are facing four counts of murder, two of attempted murder, reckless or negligent driving and driving under the influence of drugs – are due to hear their fate when the verdict is expected to be handed down in the Protea Magistrate’s Court in Soweto between Wednesday and Friday this week …………..(They have actually been sentenced already …………Mandi’s note!)

This is an AuthorTalk so please remember to bring along your two books, one to donate and one to swap and very soon, just around the corner in January/February, we will be handing over the entire collection of books, food and other goodies to Animals in Distress at the first Author event of the year. Always something to look forward to!

The Very Sexy Wonder Woman Herself

Seldom do you come across people who are so incredibly passionate on their industry or subject on which they talk and then you meet Scott, with passion for comics personified. He even arrived with a typed up printed ready to blow the house down essay. He fielded questions fabulously and I have to say he knows his “stuff”. Thus I am wholeheartedly recommending this month’s talk, our second talk with Scott from Cosmic Comics is on a superhero and he has elected to talk about the one, the only ……………………Wonder Woman, she is too sexy to film these days I hear!

Author’s Brunch
We never did this last year so we are making up for it this year! Our annual Author’s Brunch will take place on Sunday 25th of November. This is your opportunity to meet and chat with some of the authors who have been here in the past 2 years or so, including but not limited to David Bullard, Bruce Sutherland, Michael Stanley, Fiona Snyckers, Jassy Mackenzie, Joan De La Hay, Athele Oosterbroek, . Our guest author for this event is none other than Eric Miyeni whose new book The Release will be his topic of conversation. Come meet the authors, come and have brunch with us, come and have a very chilled late Sunday morning with us! Eric Miyeni’s book will be on sale on the day and the other authors will have books here as well if you need to pick up any Christmas pressies. David Bullard tells me his book will be R50 and the proceeds go to charity; I like the way he thinks!
We will serve brunch from 10am, the authors will be here from 10 to 12 at least and they are very excited and happy to spend time chatting to you on a one to one basis. The cost per head is R120, vegetarians will be catered for as always!
This is a fabulous chilled and mellow event, perfectly timed for the slowing down year!

Guest Author Eric Miyeni will be talking at the Author’s Brunch on 25 November 2012

What history moves a man to violence?

Well-known non-fiction author and TV personality Eric Miyeni makes his fiction debut with The Release. The novel is a powerful and unflinching exploration of the psychological minefield in which black middle-aged men often live.
The Release tells the story of a fateful day in the life of Jeremy Hlungwani when he inexplicably perpetrates an act of violence. Flashbacks reveal Jeremy’s biography and build a portrait of his alienation. We follow his early years, culminating in the explanation of how Jeremy has come to be in possession of a gun.
Miyeni addresses a theme which is well due in South African fiction: a psychological portrayal of a particular generation of black masculinity. The story concerns a character of the generation born in the late 1950s to early 1960s and who come to taste the first material benefits of democratic South Africa.
The Release is a delicate tale of human breakdown and serves as a reminder that the legacy of the past runs deeper than the materialistic present would have us believe.
Eric Miyeni is an actor, writer and filmmaker. He is best known for his TV role as Darryl Malgas in the series Molo Fish and as Absalom Khumalo in the movie Cry, the Beloved Country. Miyeni’s work as an author comprises four non-fiction titles, including the bestselling The Only Black at a Dinner Party. In 2010 he produced, co-wrote and co-directed the documentary Mining For Change: a story of South African mining. His first feature film, Frozen Time, is due for release in 2012.

Coming in December……………
In a classic case of who you know versus what you know I have managed to book one of the launch events for the up and coming book by Debbie Calitz and Ulrike Hill. Why does Debbie Calitz’ name sound familiar you are wondering…………………20 Months in Hell is the Debbie Calitz and Bruno Pelizzari story of their kidnapping by Somali pirates! This gripping and riveting human story is a rocking way to end the year’s AuthorTalks on a high note. Amiga’s 7th birthday party and the Pensioner’s Christmas lunch are also on the December calendar! So lots of things to look forward to in December.

Our kitchen has been really busy over the past month and the pics that follow are a couple of the wonderful things that we have delivered to clients. keep them in mind in case you need a cake or some catering!

The Lollipop October 2012

Greetings and Salutations Friends of Indulgence & Amiga 🙂

This is Jack our 90 year old birthday boy with Indulgence staff

Not unlike the rest of the year so far, September has almost passed us by in a flurry of excitement and happenings. With everything from a wonderful talk by Terry Westby-Nunn on her award winning book, Sea of Wise Insects to the Jewish Holidays, incredible thunderstorms well endowed with hail, a mini break to Cape Town for two days, reconnecting with a couple of good friends, a 90th birthday party at Indulgence, the 2nd Annual WEEAC Event and of course our Heritage Day lamb on a spit with Jazz by the truly talented Peter Auret Trio! Yes, I would say September was a fabulous month.

Terry Westby-Nunn (Sea of Wise Insects) with Karyn Maughn (The Lolly Jackson Story) at Indulgence Cafe

Thursday dinners are also coming along swimmingly. In fact the one night it was raining so much, we nearly swam out the door. I will include all the menus for October later in this post so you can get a head start in planning your dinners at Indulgence!
There is a wonderful group of tweeters that come every Thursday night who have now started calling themselves the #dinnerclub and have gone as far as opening a twitter account called @dinnerclubJHB which I think is absolutely fabulous! They are an absolute riot to have around and when they are not tweeting the conversation can get a little risque.

Calendar for October
4th Dinner at Indulgence
6th AuthorTalk
11th Dinner at Indulgence
13th Comic talk in conjunction with Cosmic Comics, SA
18th Dinner at Indulgence
25th Dinner at Indulgence
27th Kink Market

I popped along to the Good Food and Wine show on Friday so see what was happening and saw some really interesting food items and ideas to introduce at Indulgence. We were only going to go for an hour or so and ended up only getting back to the shop almost 5 hours later. It is a pity that I don’t drink in the true sense of the word as there was absolutely no shortage of wine and other beverages to sample and some looked really yum. I did have teeny tiny sips of Mead which is derived from honey and that left me with lovely honey flavours on my tongue. To take home I bought a small cheese and olive loaf, some of the best biltong I have ever tasted and sugar free chocolate that comes from the Drakensberg and is made by a husband and wife team, creamy and delicious!
We stopped browsing to have a bite of lunch at the Blue Oceans Mussels stand where they gave us a pot of delicious mussels that tasted of the sea and all things good, accompanied by a healthy portion of chips topped off with home made mayo and you could have a Stella Artoios if you so desired. I never desired

Mussels and chips with home made mayo and a Stella if one wanted!

The best biltong I have EVER tasted, comes from the Free State! Superb!

Artisan Bread from The Jozi Food Market, took home the cheese and olive loaf, delicious!

The Honey Lady where I tasted the Mead!

How are you doing?
Ready to embrace the searing heat of summer? I know I am not, bring me winter any day, but enough of that now. Rocktober is jumping up and down to begin and I have lots to tell you about what is going on here this month!
So jumping right in……………

If you are in my age group you will have learned at school a well know and much loved folk tale about a little girl and her brother who are about to be caught in a severe storm, her name was Rachel De Beer and now Brett Michael Innes has written her story down and published it. We know how this tale ends but it is a heartwarming one and it transcends South Africa’s politics and other rubbish because it is about family and love and not about murder, striking miners and mayhem. Let us celebrate the life of this very brave young lady, a remarkable figure from SA’s folk history past
So on the 6th of October at 2pm, please join us for the book Racheltjie De Beer by Brett Michael Innes. This book which is available in English and Afrikaans, is soon to become a major motion picture and goes into production in early 2013.
The book even has a trailer you can watch on at:

This is an AuthorTalk so please bring along your two books, one to swap and one to donate. Our collection of books at the moment is not fabulous so dig deep people please. Bring books along that you would like to read that are in reasonably good condition as well as opposed to the rained on, dropped in the bath, rat chewed and moth eaten copy that has been lying in a pool of grease in the garage for the past ten years or so if you get my meaning

This is a very exciting NEW event that we are adding to our calendar and hoping will be a great success. In conjunction with our new neighbours, Cosmic Comics SA, we will be hosting a comic talk either once a month or every second month. This month’s talk will be on the origins of and the history of comics starting in the 1940’s with DC Comics and Superman all the way to Marvel Comics and beyond. The next month’s may be on a superhero or a super villain or on a graphic novel……..who knows! We will just have to wait and see what they come up with but I will keep you posted. Scott will be talking comic history at 2pm on the 13th of October. Try something different! Comics will be on sale as well or you pop around the corner to Cosmic Comics and have a look at their amazing stock of comics as well as their collection of weird and wonderful characters!

Heroes and Villains!
